Christina Applegate reveals multiple sclerosis misdiagnosis
Actress Christina Applegate has revealed that her 2021 diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) was incorrect. During a recent episode of her podcast, MeSsy, the 54-year-old shared that medical professionals recently informed her she does not have the autoimmune disease.
Applegate expressed that the news brought little relief, noting that her physical condition has not improved and has, in some ways, worsened. She described feeling as though she is “back at square one,” as she continues to experience debilitating symptoms, including mobility issues that require the use of a wheelchair.
The reversal occurred after doctors suggested pausing her MS infusion treatments to observe her body's response. Discrepancies in her B-cell levels triggered a more extensive review of her case, leading to the conclusion that she does not meet the criteria for MS.
Neurologist Dr. Marwa Kaisey noted that MS misdiagnoses can be common because there is no single definitive test; instead, doctors must rely on a combination of clinical history, neurological exams, and MRI findings to rule out other conditions. Applegate’s medical team is now beginning a new investigation to determine the actual cause of her symptoms.
