Christina Koch receives Princess of Asturias Award for Concord
NASA astronaut Christina Koch has been awarded the Princess of Asturias Award in the category of Concord. During the ceremony, Koch reflected on her experience as a crew member of the Artemis II mission, which orbited the Moon in April. She emphasized the universal responsibility of space exploration, stating that the impact of manned spaceflights extends far beyond the borders of the launching nation.
Koch shared that during her mission aboard the Orion spacecraft, she observed a sense of global unity from 400,000 kilometers away. She noted that people appeared to be uniting regardless of political ideas, education, or economic resources.
Other astronauts, including Pablo Álvarez and Sara García, attended the ceremony in Oviedo. Álvarez expressed his hope that future lunar missions focus on building bridges rather than just planting flags, noting his goal to fly before the International Space Station is decommissioned around 2030. García, an oncology researcher, highlighted the International Space Station as a symbol of unprecedented human collaboration between Russia, Japan, the United States, Canada, and Europe.
