Christine Lagarde warns of European decline without deeper integration
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has issued a stark warning regarding the future of the European Union, stating that member states must choose between deeper integration or inevitable decline. Speaking at a Bundesbank event in Berlin, Lagarde cautioned that failing to act collectively could turn Europe into a 'museum'—a region characterized by weak growth and a social model that can no longer be sustained due to technological dependence on external powers.
Lagarde emphasized that pursuing purely national interests in trade, energy, or industrial policy would be an illusion that undermines the strength of the Single Market. To bolster strategic autonomy, she advocated for the development of a Savings and Investments Union to channel European capital toward critical areas, as well as the implementation of a digital euro to preserve monetary sovereignty.
In a separate initiative, Andrea Ceccherini of the Osservatorio for Independent Thinking announced that ECB President Lagarde will participate in a public dialogue with students in Milan on November 5. This event is part of the 'Young Factor' project, an economic and financial education program involving over 700,000 students across Europe, aimed at fostering critical thinking in younger generations.
