Christine Smith leads Run Against Violence team

Christine Smith, a nurse at Belmont Hospital, is leading the Willie Makit running team in the Run Against Violence to raise awareness and funds for domestic violence survivors.

Smith, who shared her personal history of surviving domestic abuse, noted that the team of 13 people is raising money for Jenny's Place, a women's refuge located in Newcastle. The Run Against Violence event, which originated in 2017 through the efforts of Kirrily Dear, involves teams walking or jogging a collective distance of 1300km over 19 days.

Smith highlighted the importance of public discourse regarding domestic violence, noting that it was previously treated as a matter of shame for women rather than the perpetrators.
