Christine Wunnicke awarded Georg Büchner Prize

Author Christine Wunnicke has been awarded the Georg Büchner Prize 2026 by the German Academy for Language and Literature. The ceremony took place at the Staatstheater in Darmstadt.

The prize, which has been awarded since 1951 and includes a 50,000 euro endowment, is considered one of the most important literary honors in the German-speaking world. In her acceptance speech, Wunnicke discussed her writing process, noting that her preferred method is to strike text, which has led to her books becoming increasingly concise.

The jury praised Wunnicke for her surprising and sovereign narrative works. They highlighted her ability to make the fictional visible within historical contexts, providing a revealing look at European scientific and colonial history through subtle wit and sophisticated reflection.
