Christmas cactus care tips for winter blooming

Schlumbergera truncata, commonly known as the Christmas cactus, requires specific care to maintain its colorful blooms throughout the winter season. Unlike desert cacti, this plant originates from Brazilian rainforests and prefers humid environments with temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius. To prevent bud drop, it is important to keep the plant away from direct sunlight and hot radiators.

To encourage blooming, especially in older plants, a temperature shift in autumn is recommended. Placing the plant in a cooler room at approximately 15 degrees Celsius for a few weeks while reducing watering can trigger bud formation. Once buds appear, the plant should not be moved or rotated, as changes in light direction can cause them to fall.

Nutrient options include a homemade mixture of sliced apple steeped in two liters of water for two days, which provides iron and potassium, or the use of wood ash. Additionally, crushed activated charcoal can be sprinkled on the soil to improve aeration and root health.
