Christoph Koncz conducts ‘Lohengrin’ premiere in Linz
The Landestheater Linz has premiered a new production of Richard Wagner’s opera ‘Lohengrin,’ marking a significant milestone for conductor Christoph Koncz. Koncz, the designated chief conductor of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz set to officially begin his tenure in September 2027, conducted his first Wagner opera with this production.
Directed by Michael Schulz with stage design by Dirk Becker, the production offers a modern interpretation of the classic tale. Rather than a traditional fairy-tale prince, the character of Lohengrin is portrayed as a calculating manipulator seeking to establish a new society. The staging utilizes timeless elements, incorporating contemporary items such as mobile phones and laptops alongside historical weaponry.
The premiere received strong acclaim from the audience, highlighting the musical leadership of Koncz and the powerful vocal performances. Notable contributors included Marco Jentzsch in the title role, Michael Wagner as King Heinrich, and the Hungarian National Male Choir, which joined the Landestheater Linz choruses to create an expansive choral sound.
