Christopher Cross apologizes to Canadians during Toronto concert

During a concert at Toronto’s RBC Amphitheatre, singer-songwriter Christopher Cross apologized to Canadian audiences for the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump, whom he referred to as ‘an asshole.’

Cross urged the crowd not to ‘give up on us,’ noting that an upcoming election offers a chance to fix current issues. He expressed that the U.S. and Canada could eventually return to normal trade relations, remarking, ‘We can be victims of corporate greed together.’

The remarks occurred amid heightened tensions between the United States and Canada. Recent friction includes a 50 percent tariff imposed by the U.S. on $20 billion of Canadian goods following failed trade talks, as well as an executive order by President Trump to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America.’ In response, Canada has implemented counter-tariffs, and several Canadian provinces have moved to ban U.S. liquor sales.

Cross also addressed the current political climate in the U.S. by performing his song ‘Dreamers,’ which features a clip of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. He stated the recording represents a ‘very dark time’ in American history that is currently repeating itself.
