Christopher Gillum released after grand jury declines terrorism indictment

Christopher Gillum, a 45-year-old former police officer, has been released from custody after a Louisiana grand jury declined to indict him on state terrorism charges. Gillum was originally arrested in April at a Florida hotel with a handgun and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition.

Authorities alleged that Gillum was planning a mass shooting targeting Black people at a large festival in New Orleans, which investigators believed was the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. While the specific event was not officially named by all agencies, the timing of the arrest coincided with the festival's opening.

A spokesperson for Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill noted that jurisdictional issues complicated the case, stating that the threats against a family member occurred in North Carolina and that Gillum had not entered Louisiana prior to his arrest. Gillum's attorney, Dylan Utley, confirmed that he is not facing charges in any other jurisdictions. His family had previously reported him missing and noted a history of mental health struggles.
