Christopher Melenciano wins gold in mixed 4x400m relay

Dominican sprinter Christopher Melenciano, a 28-year-old deaf athlete, secured a gold medal in the mixed 4x400m relay at the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games. He competed alongside Erick Sánchez, Anabel Medina, and Marileidy Paulino.

Melenciano's journey is marked by significant personal challenges. His hearing impairment was discovered at age three, a period his mother, Marisol Reyes, described as one of initial denial and communication barriers. To support his development, Reyes, a former boxer and martial artist, encouraged his involvement in various sports from a young age.

After exploring disciplines such as boxing and baseball, Melenciano found success in sprinting. His recent victory is seen as a culmination of years of overcoming economic difficulties and physical limitations to reach the international stage.
