Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' tops $1 billion worldwide, drives tourism and sparks criticism

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic, "The Odyssey," has generated $395 million in domestic ticket sales and $911 million worldwide, putting it on track to breach the $1 billion mark. The film’s box‑office success has been mirrored by record performances in specific markets: it became India’s biggest IMAX release with Rs 63 crore in 17 days, and in Italy it was overtaken by "Spider‑Man" which earned €16 million in five days.

The release has also spurred cultural and economic ripple effects. Travel demand to Greece jumped 72 % year‑on‑year, with eSIM plans and flight searches to filming locations soaring. In the United States, sales of printed editions of Homer’s "Odyssey" rose 76 % after the movie’s debut, making the classic the most sought‑after title in libraries and bookstores.

Classicist Emily Wilson, whose translation inspired the screenplay, has repeatedly condemned the film as “emotionally empty” and lacking psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth. Nolan responded by dismissing such criticism as irrelevant, while also warning of a “fundamental flaw” in amateur film criticism. The film continues to dominate headlines across markets and media, reflecting both its commercial power and the debate it has ignited.
