Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' faces casting backlash ahead of historic IMAX release

Academy‑award‑winning director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey is set to open worldwide on July 17 2026. The film, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and others, is the first feature shot entirely on IMAX 70 mm film, using a newly engineered “blimp” camera enclosure for synchronized sound.

Pre‑release discussion has focused on casting choices – notably Nyong’o as Helen of Troy – and the decision to use modern American‑accented dialogue. Nolan has dismissed the criticism as “irrelevant” because audiences have not yet seen the finished work, citing similar backlash he weathered when casting Heath Ledger as the Joker. He likened the debate to the “territory” of any ambitious adaptation.

The film’s promotional tour includes a historic premiere in Mumbai, where Nolan, Damon and Holland made an unannounced stop at a local café, and extensive IMAX screenings that sold out weeks in advance. Social media virality also spread a meme pairing Sydney Sweeney with the movie, underscoring the project’s cultural buzz.
