Christopher Nolan expands Argos's role in his new Odyssey adaptation

Director Christopher Nolan has given the faithful dog Argos a much larger presence in his upcoming film adaptation of Homer's *Odyssey*. While the ancient poem features Argos only in a brief reunion scene, Nolan expands the character into a secondary figure who appears in flashbacks of Odysseus's youth and hunting expeditions, portrayed by three Portuguese Podengo dogs representing different ages.

Nolan explained that his recent personal experience with dogs motivated the decision. After adopting a dog named Charlie following his children’s departure for university, he said, "I decided to make the Odyssey because it is the definitive story about dogs." The director also noted that the dog's expanded role adds emotional depth to the hero’s journey and aligns with his own newfound affection for canines. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and is expected to highlight the enduring bond between the hero and his loyal companion.
