Christopher Nolan releases ‘The Odyssey’ film adaptation
Director Christopher Nolan has released a large-scale film adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, ‘The Odyssey’. The historical fantasy adventure follows the journey of Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, as he attempts to return home to his wife Penelope and son Telemachus following the Trojan War.
Starring Matt Damon, the film features a score by Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson. The production is noted for its high production value and IMAX format. Some interpretations of the film suggest a focus on Odysseus dealing with the psychological aftermath of the war, specifically his guilt regarding the use of the Trojan Horse.
While the film serves as a visual spectacle, it has faced criticism regarding its source material. Specifically, translator Emily Wilson has expressed dissatisfaction with the adaptation, comparing the result to an ‘elaborate Fourth of July fireworks’ display.
