Christopher Nolan Says He Will Make a Horror Film When the Right Story Arrives

Director Christopher Nolan confirmed that he wants to direct a pure horror film, but will only proceed if he finds a story strong enough to justify the genre. Speaking with interviewer Fred Asquith while promoting his upcoming epic The Odyssey, Nolan said, “I’d love to do a horror movie… it’s all about the idea, about whether there’s a story that really compels you.”

He noted that horror elements already exist in his work, citing Oppenheimer as having a “horror‑like” quality and pointing out that Homer’s source material for The Odyssey contains terrifying scenes that he has emphasized in the new film. Nolan described horror as “essentially cinematic” and valued for its visceral, audience‑driven experience. The Odyssey premiered in London on July 6 and will open in the United States and United Kingdom on July 17, raising expectations that Nolan may soon move into the genre once a suitable narrative is found.
