Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' sparks global hype, casting debate and historic IMAX rollout

Director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus and featuring a large ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page and Travis Scott, is set for worldwide release on 17 July 2026. The movie will be the first feature shot entirely with IMAX 70 mm cameras, a technical milestone Nolan highlighted while describing how he encouraged fellow filmmaker Ryan Coogler to use the format for his 2025 project Sinners.

The film has generated massive public interest and controversy. Critics have focused on casting choices—particularly Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and the inclusion of transgender actor Page—which some conservative commentators have attacked as a departure from Homer’s description. Social media debates have also targeted costume design, accents and the decision by Universal Pictures to ban influencer advance screenings, opting instead for early critic reviews.

Nolan has used the promotional wave to call on Hollywood studios to take creative risks, arguing that “playing it safe” no longer works with mainstream audiences. Industry analysts anticipate the film could become a billion‑dollar box‑office event, while educators and museums report a surge in classical‑studies engagement inspired by the upcoming adaptation.
