Christopher Nolan's filmmaking approach and Oppenheimer production details

Director Christopher Nolan utilizes specific technical workflows to serve dramatic purposes. For the film ‘Oppenheimer’, Nolan used photochemical film, including 65mm IMAX, to manage the relationship between resolution, color, and human vision. He employed different camera placements and formats to distinguish character perspectives: the camera remained physically closer to Oppenheimer in color sequences, while black-and-white sequences used longer lenses to photograph him through the perspective of Lewis Strauss.

Regarding production logistics, cast members including Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr. noted that Nolan prioritizes budget allocation toward the screen. During filming in locations such as Los Alamos, New Mexico, the cast stayed in modest accommodations. Emily Blunt described the living quarters as resembling ‘cell block’ cabins. Robert Downey Jr. noted that he opted for more comfortable lodging at The Inn of the Five Graces, using his own funds to do so.
