Christopher Nolan's 'Odyssey' earns strong early praise at New York press screenings

Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic "Odyseja" (Odyssey) has held two limited press screenings, including one at New York's AMC Lincoln Square 13. Critics reported enthusiastic reactions, applauding Matt Damon's portrayal of Odysseus, as well as strong performances by Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland, whose role was described by one attendee as "Oscar-worthy."

Early commentary also highlighted the film’s spectacular visuals—Cyclops, sirens, Charybdis and a shipwreck sequence—and its music. Elliot Page does not appear as Achilles; he portrays Sinon, a Greek soldier from the mythic tradition of the Trojan Horse.

The production, budgeted at about $250 million, uses new IMAX cameras with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. Universal has chosen to restrict pre‑release screenings to professional critics rather than influencers, aiming for reviews to shape public expectations. The worldwide theatrical debut is set for 17 July 2026.
