Classicist Emily Wilson, whose 2017 English translation of the poem was cited by Nolan, published a scathing review in the *London Review of Books*, describing the film as lacking psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth and criticizing its narrative structure. While some British critics hailed the movie as “film of the year,” Wilson’s remarks underscore a divide between cinematic spectacle and scholarly expectations.

Nolan’s production quirks added further headlines: the director prohibited UGG boots on set, arguing they break the period illusion, and the demanding sea‑shoots produced spontaneous moments such as a dolphin appearing on camera. In Brazil, the film drove a 1,750 % surge in Google searches for its title, and in New York early‑morning IMAX 70 mm screenings sold out, prompting crowds of fans to attend after‑midnight showings.
