Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' draws praise for Zendaya and sparks debate over translation choice

Director Christopher Nolan’s 2026 adaptation of Homer’s epic, titled “The Odyssey,” features Zendaya as Athena, Matt Damon as Odysseus and Tom Holland as Telemachus. Nolan praised Zendaya’s performance with a rare “perfect,” a compliment that Damon said he and Holland envied.

Separately, analysts have highlighted Nolan’s decision to base the screenplay on the 2017 Emily Wilson translation of the poem. Nolan told Empire Magazine that the film draws from Wilson’s version, which opens with “Tell me about a complicated man.” Critics argue that Wilson’s modernized language and emphasis on contemporary gender themes could alter the story’s traditional heroic tone, prompting a debate about the influence of the translation on the film’s narrative.
