Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' premieres in London

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, opened with a world‑premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. The red‑carpet event featured an ensemble cast that included Matt Damon (Odysseus), Tom Holland (Telemachus), Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and others, as well as producer Emma Thomas and studio executive Donna Langley.

The film, shot entirely with IMAX cameras, is scheduled for worldwide release on July 17, 2026, with an anticipated U.S. opening of $80‑$100 million. Early critic reactions praise its scale, visual spectacle and performances, calling it a “triumphant, spectacular epic.”

In a Reuters interview, Nolan explained that adapting the ancient poem required structural changes to provide modern audiences with necessary context, emphasizing entertainment over education. He noted the challenge of translating a story whose original viewers already knew the plot.

Actor Tom Holland told Deadline that the London premiere was “arguably one of the biggest days of my life,” noting he skipped an early‑morning World Cup match to attend. The film’s global promotional tour will continue with stops in Paris, Mumbai and New York.
