Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' to debut in limited IMAX 70mm and feature a non‑orchestral bronze‑age score

The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s next film, opens on July 17, 2026 and was shot entirely on IMAX film cameras. It will be exhibited in up to six formats, with IMAX 70mm considered the gold‑standard. Fewer than 30 theaters worldwide can show the 70mm version, making tickets scarce and prompting resale listings that have reached $1,000. Universal Pictures has created an interactive page that lets viewers compare the visual experience of each format.

Composer Ludwig Göransson, a frequent Nolan collaborator, was asked to create a score with no traditional orchestra. "He wanted something completely unique… No orchestra," Göransson explained. The resulting soundtrack draws on Late Bronze‑Age instruments such as the aulos, lyre, and bronze gongs, giving the film an unprecedented acoustic palette.
