Christopher Paul faces police chief role amid rape charges
Christopher Paul, a 48-year-old Republican, has become the sole candidate for the position of police chief in Elizabeth, Louisiana. His unopposed status follows the withdrawal of his only opponent, Zachary LaCaze, who cited conflicts with the federal Hatch Act regarding his employment at Fort Polk.
Paul was arrested in early September and faces two counts of second-degree rape. The charges stem from allegations of sexual assaults against two 13-year-old girls occurring approximately two decades ago, between 2005 and 2006. Although facing these serious criminal charges, state law does not prohibit him from running for or assuming public office because he has not yet been convicted of a felony.
The Youth Peace & Justice Foundation has called for Paul to voluntarily resign while the legal proceedings continue. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Mayor Mandy Green has noted that the accused maintains the presumption of innocence.
