Christopher Phillips jailed for freezer‑stored mother and benefit fraud
Christopher Phillips, 60, was sentenced at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court to two years and four months in prison after admitting he prevented the lawful burial of his 89‑year‑old mother, Sylvia Phillips, and defrauded the state. Following her death on 8 March 2023 in their Porthcawl home, Phillips bought a chest freezer and kept her body in the living‑room for almost three years. The body was discovered in February 2026 during a welfare check; it was covered with a leopard‑print throw, surrounded by roses and a birthday card reading “To Mum, from Christopher and Tina” (the family dog). He failed to notify the Department for Work and Pensions or Bridgend County Council, allowing more than £78,000 in pension, attendance allowance, winter‑fuel payments and other benefits to continue flowing into his mother’s bank account, which he accessed. Detective Chief Inspector Claire Lamerton called the case “extremely sad”, and Judge Tracey Lloyd‑Clarke noted the aggravating factor of the prolonged concealment and financial gain. Phillips had left his job to become his mother’s full‑time carer in the months before her death, and the cause of her death remains undetermined.
