Greek Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas, accompanied by Deputy Minister Nikos Tachiaos and General Secretary Dimitris Anagnopoulos, inspected the construction sites of the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) in Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. He said that works are now underway on all sections of the new highway and that bypass projects in Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion are proceeding according to schedule. The first roughly 10 km stretch from Agios Nikolaos to Neapoli is expected to open soon. Parallel safety upgrades on the existing BOAK, covering 131 km from Kissamos to Heraklion, include resurfacing, new road markings, vertical signage, safety barriers, lighting improvements and vegetation control. Completed works include the Chania‑Kolymbari, Rethymno‑Geropotamos and Heraklion‑Linopeirata sections. The ministry aims to finish the remaining high‑risk sections (Suda‑Giorgioupoli, Petres‑Atsipoulo, Kissamos‑Kolymbari, Geropotamos‑CHTA) by the end of August, with the overall goal of improving traffic safety and reducing accidents across Crete.
