Christos Markidis, prominent Greek painter and poet, found dead
The prominent Greek painter and poet Christos Markidis was found dead in his apartment in the Exarcheia district of Athens on Monday, August 24, 2026. The 72-year-old artist had been missing for several days before authorities located him.
Initial police investigations and forensic assessments suggest the death may be a suicide. Authorities are continuing to examine all available evidence to clarify the exact circumstances. In a social media post made hours before his death, Markidis had shared a quote regarding ‘the terrible trap of existence,’ referencing the 1968 film Persona.
Born in Drama in 1954, Markidis was a significant figure in contemporary Greek art. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and later worked in Paris. His prolific career spanned over four decades, including 15 solo exhibitions and more than 70 group exhibitions across Greece and abroad. His work frequently focused on portraits, the human form, and still lifes, characterized by a symbolic use of light and dark tones. In addition to his painting, he published six poetry collections and several essay works.
