The Judicial Council of the Supreme Court of Greece has decided to refer former Deputy Minister Christos Triantopoulos to a Special Court for breach of duty. The referral concerns the handling of the Tempi railway accident site, specifically allegations regarding the unauthorized alteration of the scene—including the spreading of gravel and sawdust—which may have hindered investigations and led to the loss of critical evidence.

Alongside Triantopoulos, the Council has proposed the referral of four other individuals to the Special Court: former Thessaly Regional Governor Kostas Agorastos, former General Secretary of Civil Protection Vasilis Papageorgiou, the then-head of the Hellenic Police in Larissa Agapios Charakopoulos, and the head of the Fire Service Evangelos Falaras.

Christos Triantopoulos has denied all charges, maintaining that his role was limited to coordinating state aid and that he did not order any site alterations. Following the decision, Triantopoulos announced he will not run as a candidate for the New Democracy party in Magnesia for the 2027 elections, stating that his priority is the judicial process. The Greek government has stated it respects the judiciary, noting that the referral is an intermediate stage and that the presumption of innocence remains in effect.
