Chromium and WebKit to introduce Exclusive Accordions HTML functionality

A new HTML functionality known as ‘Exclusive Accordions’ is expected to arrive in Chromium and WebKit browsers. This feature allows a series of expand/collapse widgets to function such that opening one section automatically closes any previously opened section, provided they share the same ‘name’ attribute.

While this simplifies certain interface behaviors, it presents several accessibility challenges. Potential issues include increased cognitive load because users cannot compare information between two sections simultaneously, difficulty scanning content, and complications for keyboard users who must navigate multiple buttons to switch sections. Additionally, screen reader users may face reduced usability when attempting to use heading-level navigation to overview page content.
