Chronic diseases and mental health pose major economic risks
Chronic diseases and mental health issues are significantly impacting global and national economies. According to data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and the OECD, the economic burden of chronic illnesses in the EU is primarily driven by reduced labor productivity and workforce inactivity, rather than direct healthcare spending.
In Poland, the economic impact is particularly severe. Projections suggest that cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and diabetes could collectively reduce Poland’s potential annual GDP by approximately 3.65%. This loss stems from premature death, early retirement, and decreased efficiency among working individuals.
Separately, a Global Burden of Disease 2023 analysis published in ‘The Lancet’ identifies mental disorders as the leading cause of years lived with disability worldwide. There were an estimated 1.17 billion cases in 2023, a 95% increase since 1990. Researchers noted that the burden is highest among individuals aged 15–19, emphasizing the need for early intervention.
