Chronic kidney disease and nursing-led care models in healthcare
Chronic kidney disease has become a significant global health priority, with the World Health Organization emphasizing the need for equitable access to treatment modalities. Experts note that the condition affects between one-sixth and one-seventh of the global population. In Spain, it is estimated to affect approximately 10% of the adult population, or roughly 4.3 million citizens. The disease often progresses silently, frequently discovered during routine blood tests in patients over 65 or those with diabetes and hypertension.
In response to evolving healthcare needs, institutions like the Hospital de León are implementing new care models that increase the role of nursing staff. The hospital has established ten specialized nursing-led consultations in areas such as Neurology, Cardiology, and Nephrology, including new spaces for Oncohematology. This model aims to humanize healthcare by providing patients with direct access to reference nurses, bypassing traditional waiting lists and central switchboards. By focusing on patient self-care and continuous support, the initiative seeks to improve emotional well-being and reduce unnecessary hospital readmissions and emergency room visits.
