Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia treatment sees advancements and new drug availability
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), a common blood cancer primarily affecting older adults, is seeing significant therapeutic advancements. An international survey of 846 patients across more than ten countries revealed that 69% experienced symptoms before diagnosis, though 89% did not realize these symptoms—such as fatigue, swollen lymph nodes, or night sweats—were linked to leukemia. Many cases are identified through routine blood tests.
In Spain, where approximately 2,100 new cases are reported annually, the drug pirtobrutinib (Jaypirca) has become available. This non-covalent BTK inhibitor provides a new treatment alternative for patients with advanced CLL who have developed resistance to previous covalent BTK inhibitors. This development marks a significant step in managing the disease when standard targeted therapies no longer prove effective.
