Chrysanthemums: Tips for seed starting and plant care

Chrysanthemums are popular autumn flowers known for providing vibrant color as other plants fade. Gardeners can achieve seasonal displays economically by starting plants from seed rather than purchasing expensive potted versions. Successful seed starting requires matching sowing schedules to local frost dates, typically starting indoors several weeks before the last spring frost, and ensuring plants are placed in full sun with well-drained, compost-enriched soil.

To maintain existing potted chrysanthemums, it is critical to avoid overwatering. While the growing medium should remain slightly moist, permanent waterlogging can lead to yellowing leaves, loss of vigor, and root rot. Checking soil moisture manually before watering is recommended to prevent excess water from depriving roots of oxygen. Proper placement and drainage are also essential for extending the plant's flowering lifespan.
