Chrysomilia village defies Greek demographic decline with high birth rates
The village of Chrysomilia, located in the Meteora municipality of Thessaly, is defying Greece’s broader demographic decline. While most municipalities in the Thessaly region are experiencing population decreases and shrinking school enrollments, Chrysomilia remains a vibrant exception.
According to Nikos Stefanopoulos, president of the Chrysomilia Municipal Unit, approximately 70% of the village's couples are large or three-child families. This trend is driven by young couples choosing to remain in their local community to raise families rather than migrating to major urban centers or moving abroad.
The village has a permanent population of approximately 500 residents. Located at an altitude of 900 meters in the Pindus region, the local economy is primarily based on agriculture, livestock, beekeeping, and forestry.
