South Korean political nominees face intense scrutiny and controversy

South Korean political figures are embroiled in controversies regarding high-level appointments and campaign finances. Gyeonggi Governor Cho Mi-ae has repeatedly called for the withdrawal of Kim Ji-yong, the nominee for the first head of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency. Cho criticized Kim’s past actions as a prosecutor, specifically citing his involvement in the Channel A case and the exit ban of former Vice Justice Minister Kim Hak-eui, accusing him of failing to uphold judicial justice.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety has defended Kim, stating he expressed opposing views on key prosecutions and was not the final decision-maker. Meanwhile, Cho Mi-ae is facing scrutiny from the Democratic Party regarding approximately 2.1 billion won in election consulting fees paid to a pro-government YouTuber's firm. Party leader Kim Min-seok stated the party would investigate the appropriateness and transparency of the contract.

Separately, Choi Gil-soo, the nominee for Special Inspector, faced a heated confirmation hearing at the National Assembly. Lawmakers clashed over the scope of the inspector's authority, with the opposition demanding investigations into the current administration and specific presidential staff, while the ruling party argued for limits based on existing law. Choi also addressed allegations regarding his family's false residency registration and tax deduction issues.
