Kim Ji-yong nomination sparks political clash in South Korea

Controversy is intensifying over the nomination of Kim Ji-yong as the first head of the newly launched Serious Crime Investigation Agency (SCIA). President Lee Jae-myung has officially requested a parliamentary hearing for Kim, defending the appointment by stating that Kim is not a pro-Yoon Suk-yeol prosecutor. The President noted that Kim was previously sidelined after attempting to re-investigate matters involving former President Yoon's family.

However, Gyeonggi Governor Chu Mi-ae has launched a sharp critique against the nomination, calling Kim an individual who “could turn his back on the people and justice at any time.” Chu, who previously appointed Kim as a prosecutor during her tenure as Minister of Justice, urged the President not to use her past recommendation as evidence of Kim's reliability. She explained that the promotion was based on a vice minister's recommendation and noted that Kim later participated in collective protests against disciplinary actions against former Prosecutor General Yoon Suk-yeol.

Political commentators and members of the Democratic Party have also weighed in. While some criticize Chu's aggressive stance, others argue that the focus should remain on Kim's suitability to lead a reform-oriented agency rather than his past political affiliations. The SCIA has officially launched, but it currently remains without a leader pending the results of the upcoming legislative hearing.
