Chubut lawyers file injunction against YPF environmental agreement
A group of environmental lawyers and the Association of Indigenous Law Lawyers (AADI) have filed a judicial injunction in Chubut, Argentina, to halt an agreement between the provincial government and the energy company YPF.
The legal action follows YPF’s withdrawal from mature oil fields in the Golfo San Jorge area. The plaintiffs seek to declare the agreement null, arguing it allows the company to settle environmental liabilities through monetary payments and real estate transfers rather than direct environmental remediation.
Lawyers representing the claim, including Eduardo Hualpa, argue that the negotiation lacked mandatory citizen participation, technical intervention from the Municipality of Comodoro Rivadavia, and transparency. They further contend that the agreement violates the Escazú Agreement regarding access to information and public participation in environmental matters.
