Chubut officials commemorate 54th anniversary of Trelew Massacre
Authorities and human rights representatives in Chubut are observing the 54th anniversary of the Trelew Massacre. Chubut Governor Ignacio Torres met with relatives of the victims and human rights leaders to coordinate a series of commemorative activities during Memory Week, including educational programs, book presentations, and vigils.
The central official act is scheduled for August 22 at the Trelew Cultural Center for Memory, followed by a visit to the Almirante Zar Naval Base, the site where the executions occurred.
The massacre took place on August 22, 1972, when 16 political prisoners were executed by the Navy at the Almirante Zar base. The incident followed a failed escape attempt from the Rawson prison. Although a pact had been made to return the prisoners to jail under legal guarantees, the agreement was breached, resulting in the deaths of the militants.
