Chubut to plant 109,000 native trees for forest restoration

The Chubut government has announced a reforestation initiative to plant 109,100 native trees across 127 hectares during September and October. The project targets areas previously affected by forest fires, including the Lago Epuyén Multiple Use Reserve, Cerro Currumahuida Provincial Reserve, Río Turbio Multiple Use Park and Reserve, and the Río Tigre Protected Natural Area.

This campaign is part of the ProCLIM-AR project, a bilateral cooperation initiative between Argentina and Germany aimed at promoting low-carbon and climate-resilient development pathways. The restoration efforts are led by the Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina and the Fundación para cuidar al planeta y sus habitantes, in coordination with the Chubut Forestry Secretariat.

The implementation strategy varies by location: some areas will undergo direct planting, while others require clearing invasive pine regrowth caused by fires. Site selection was based on technical criteria such as fire damage severity, the presence of native versus exotic species, and natural regeneration potential. Local communities are also participating in the process in the Lago Epuyén and Río Turbio regions.
