Chubut wool production falls up to 30% amid climate crisis
Wool production in the Chubut region of Argentina has reportedly fallen by up to 30% due to poor livestock conditions. Producers attribute this decline to recent droughts and climate emergencies, which have left sheep in low body condition at the time of shearing.
In addition to climate factors, the spread of sheep scab is impacting the sector. Producers are calling for urgent government intervention, specifically requesting credit lines to fund sanitary treatments, infrastructure such as fencing, and livestock supplementation. The President of the Sociedad Rural de Comodoro has also requested progress on predator management and the planned guanaco census.
