Chuck Grassley Demands Verizon Explain Missing Arctic Frost Subpoena Disclosure

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley sent a letter to Verizon demanding an explanation for the company's failure to disclose a May 2023 grand‑jury subpoena issued by Special Counsel Jack Smith’s “Arctic Frost” investigation. The subpoena sought phone‑toll records for Senate devices, including two numbers belonging to the Senate Sergeant‑at‑Arms, and should have triggered automatic notification under Verizon’s 2022 contract with the Senate.

Verizon told Congress in 2025 that the omission was due to “human error,” after the subpoena vanished from its compliance files for more than two years. Grassley’s letter asks whether Verizon actually located the subpoena during its 2023 search and deliberately withheld it, or genuinely missed the request, and seeks details on when the company became aware of the subpoenas and why it failed to inform affected senators as required.
