Chuck Grassley files preliminary paperwork for 2028 reelection

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has filed preliminary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission for reelection in November 2028. Currently 93 years old, Grassley has served in the Senate since 1981. If he wins and serves his next term in full, he would be 101 years old by the time he leaves office.

Grassley holds significant leadership roles, serving as the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and as president pro tempore of the Senate. His position as president pro tempore makes him third in the line of presidential succession, following the vice president and the speaker of the House.

The potential reelection campaign has prompted discussions regarding the length of tenure for long-serving officials in Washington. While supporters value the experience of veteran lawmakers, the prospect of Grassley serving into his next decade has renewed debates over whether public service should include more frequent transitions in leadership.
