Chuck Lorre details casting challenges for Two and a Half Men
In his new memoir, ‘Sitcom’, Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre reveals the significant resistance he faced from CBS regarding the casting of Jon Cryer. According to Lorre, the network’s head of casting was explicitly against hiring Cryer for the role of Alan Harper.
The network reportedly cited Cryer’s previous history with several short-lived sitcoms as a reason for their hesitation. Lorre relayed a warning from the network stating, ‘Just be warned, we don't want to hear the words “Jon Cryer”.’ The network's stance was that Cryer was responsible for the failure of his previous projects, with one official allegedly claiming he ‘was the death of comedy.’
Despite this pushback, Lorre advocated for Cryer based on their previous work together on ‘Dharma & Greg’. The series eventually became one of the most successful sitcoms of the 21st century, starring Sheen, Cryer, and Angus T. Jones.
