Chuck Schumer May Back Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez If She Runs for President
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is reported to be willing to support Rep. Alexandria Ocasio‑Cortez should she decide to run for the White House, according to Democratic insiders. A longtime Democratic strategist said, “He’s sharp enough that if Ocasio‑Cortez throws her hat in the ring for the White House, he could very well become one of her staunchest advocates.”
The speculation follows a wave of progressive victories in recent primaries, with three far‑left House candidates winning races backed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Ocasio‑Cortez has also begun paying $260,000 annually to the party’s fundraising arm, signaling a shift from outsider to insider. Kamala Harris invited her to speak at the 2024 Democratic National Convention, prompting criticism from Democratic Socialists of America.
Schumer, who has served 45 years in Congress, declined to comment on any future presidential bid but reiterated his focus on “taking back the Senate and reversing the damage Donald Trump has done to the United States.” Some Republican operatives suggest that an AOC presidential run could ultimately pressure Schumer into retirement.
