Chuck Varga, GWAR founding member and artist, dies at 68

Chuck Varga, a founding member and multidisciplinary artist for the shock metal band GWAR, has died at age 68 following a battle with cancer. His passing was announced by band bassist Casey Orr, who noted that Varga passed away peacefully with his wife, Bambi, by his side.

Varga was instrumental in shaping the band’s visual identity. As a student at Virginia Commonwealth University, he co-founded Slave Pit Studios, the creative collective responsible for the group's elaborate costumes, props, and stagecraft. He was most widely recognized for portraying the character ‘the Sexecutioner’ on stage from 1985 to 2022 and contributed vocals to several tracks, including ‘Sexecutioner’ and ‘RagNaRok’.

Beyond his performance role, Varga was a sculptor, illustrator, and set designer. After leaving the band's regular touring lineup in 1997, he worked in film, television, and Broadway in New York before founding Hyperreal Productions. In recent months, GWAR had organized fundraisers and blood drives to support Varga and his family during his illness.
