Chuck Wright begins 41-month federal prison sentence

Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright has reported to federal prison to begin serving a 41-month sentence. While his attorneys had requested he serve his time at a facility in Jesup, Georgia, to access a drug rehabilitation program, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed he reported to a medium-security facility in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

Wright, 61, resigned in May 2025 following a joint investigation by the FBI and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The probe, which began after reports of questionable spending on county-funded credit cards, expanded to include allegations of pill misuse and the misappropriation of funds.

In October, Wright pleaded guilty to three federal public corruption charges: conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and obtaining controlled substances through misrepresentation. His sentence also includes hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution.
