Chudo Kaikaku Rengo announces restart after failed merger

The Chudo Kaikaku Rengo (Centrist Reform Alliance) has announced it will ‘restart’ its operations following the failure of a planned merger with the Constitutional Democratic Party and Komeito. The move follows a significant split within the group, which was formed just seven months ago through a merger of centrist factions.

The alliance suffered a major setback in the February 2026 general election, securing only 49 seats against an initial projection of 172. This defeat has led to internal friction, particularly regarding the balance of power between former Komeito and Constitutional Democratic members. While representative Junya Ogawa is attempting to maintain unity, some members are reportedly considering the formation of new parties, raising the possibility of a total dissolution.

Political analysts note that Yoshihiko Noda, the former leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party during the alliance's formation, has remained silent on the split. He faces criticism from members who blame his leadership for the heavy losses in the general election. Despite the internal turmoil, the alliance maintains that its core mission to strengthen centrist political influence remains unchanged.
