Centrist Reform Alliance to split following election defeat

The Centrist Reform Alliance, a major Japanese opposition bloc formed eight months ago, has officially decided to split following a significant defeat in the February general elections. The alliance, which aimed to provide a counterweight to the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), secured only 49 seats in the House of Representatives, a sharp decline from its predecessor parties' combined strength.

Under a new plan approved by party members, the alliance will effectively dissolve through a strategic split. Members originally from the Constitutional Democratic Party (CDPJ) will leave to form a new political party, while those from Komeito will return to their original party. To manage remaining financial obligations, the alliance will maintain a minimal legal existence with a single Diet member remaining on staff to facilitate the settlement of debts and the receipt of remaining political party subsidies.

Despite the formal split, the various factions intend to form a unified parliamentary group in the House of Representatives to continue acting as an opposition force. Leader Junya Ogawa stated that the decision to maintain the party's legal structure temporarily is necessary to settle approximately 1.16 billion yen in outstanding payments related to the previous election cycle.
