Nigeria clinches historic athletics golds at 2026 Commonwealth Games
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi became the first Nigerian to win Commonwealth Games men’s shot put gold, throwing 21.07 m and edging New Zealand’s Tom Walsh. Goodness Nwachukwu set a new world record in the women’s F42 discus with a throw of 39.66 m. Tobi Amusan, despite injury, earned bronze in the women’s 100 m hurdles in 12.60 s. Ezekiel Nathaniel secured Nigeria’s first Commonwealth gold in the men’s 400 m hurdles, finishing in 48.47 s. Ruth Usoro added a silver medal in the women’s long jump with a 6.87 m leap, and the men’s 4 × 100 m relay team took silver in 38.12 s. Samuel Ogazi won Nigeria’s inaugural men’s 400 m gold in 44.25 s. These performances lifted Nigeria’s medal tally to 16 (eight gold, five silver, three bronze), placing the country fifth overall and top among African nations at the Glasgow 2026 Games.
