Chulalongkorn University develops Metaverse Lab-XR for medical students

Asst. Prof. Dr. Navaporn Worasilchai of Chulalongkorn University has developed Metaverse Lab-XR, an innovative virtual laboratory designed for medical technology students. The platform recreates hospital laboratory environments, allowing third- and fourth-year clinical microbiology students to practice diagnostic procedures and laboratory workflows independently.

The initial training module focuses on diagnosing fungal infections. Through realistic scenarios, students practice patient information verification, test selection, and responding to anomalous results. Beyond technical proficiency, the system aims to develop soft skills such as teamwork, communication with medical staff, critical thinking, and laboratory management.

Since its implementation in early 2024, the project has reportedly increased student learning outcomes by approximately 20%. The virtual environment also provides a psychologically safe space for repetitive practice and helps reduce infection risks by preparing students before they handle actual biological specimens. In September 2025, the project was recognized with the Outstanding Innovation Award for Student Development by Thailand's Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation.
