Chumillas mayoral seat contested as PSOE rejects PP censure motion
The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in the province of Cuenca has publicly rejected a motion of censure put forward by the People's Party (PP) to take control of the mayoralty of Chumillas. The motion follows the resignation of one of the two socialist councillors and, according to PSOE, disregards the clear electoral choice of local voters.
PSOE points out that in the 2023 municipal election the socialist list received about 56 % of the votes (24 and 25 votes for its two candidates) while the PP candidates obtained roughly 24 % (12 and 10 votes). The party argues that the PP’s attempt to seize the mayor’s office less than a year before the next election is a breach of democratic norms. It also criticises the newly appointed mayor’s poor attendance record in council sessions and references similar cases in nearby municipalities where PSOE chose to respect electoral outcomes rather than pursue a partisan takeover.
